Teeth Grinding & Migraine Treatments

Dr. Mark Hamilton is a highly experienced practitioner in the field of Bruxism (Teeth Grinding) and is an instructor in the technique of injecting into the Masseter muscle. While Botox is best known for treating wrinkles, it also helps to relax the muscles that cause Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) syndrome.  TMJ can be a result of bone deformity or from grinding your teeth.

Teeth grinding can be helped by injecting Botox into the masseter muscle. The masseter muscle is the main teeth-grinding muscle, Mouth guards can help but they only protect against your teeth. Botox works by relieving jaw tension and pain. It reduces headaches and teeth grinding by relaxing the muscles which create this stress. It will also keep your jaw muscles from looking defined and seeming wider.

The procedure involves injecting botulinum toxin into the masseter and /or temporalis muscles. The treatment takes about 20 minutes with  injections on either side of your face and directly into your jaw muscles. The injections go into the masseter muscle which is located at the angle of the jaw. It does not hurt.

Dosage is usually 50 units of Botox (25 units on each side). The dosing for treatment is variable and based on the desired effect and the strength of the muscles being injected. The most suitable dosage for you can only be decided at your consultation. The usual number of units of toxin required is equivalent to two areas of anti wrinkle injections.

You might not notice any difference at first as results take a week or two to take effect.  When Botox is used to relieve the pain of TMJ and teeth-grinding, you can expect some pain relief in around a week.

The injections generally take one week to start working and 2 weeks for a full effect, which lasts on average 12-16 weeks, and slowly wear off.

The injections are generally repeated every 3-4 months. A positive cosmetic side effect is the improvement of the jawline.

When Botox is used to reduce masseter muscle hypertrophy cosmetically, the maximum effect is not seen for six weeks.

There’s no downtime or residual pain

Those of you who experience migraine know that when a migraine hits, the pain you experience is not exaggerated—the throbbing from an intense headache on top of the nausea and light sensitivity makes you feel pretty dreadful.

Botox for migraines flew under the radar for years as many people know Botox only as a procedure for treating wrinkles. It’s effect on migraines was discovered when people who were having Botox injections to treat lines in their foreheads noticed that their headaches were improved.

Injections take about 20 minutes and you can drive home right after. When treating migraines with Botox, it is injected into the muscles in the forehead and the temples. In more severe cases Dr. Hamilton will inject into the back of the head, neck, and shoulders. It can take a lot of injections, between 20 to 40 in one sessions. It’s a small needle, so the injections feel like tiny pinpricks.

You may need to start with 2 treatments spaced 12 weeks apart—to see how well the injections work for you. You might feel results as soon as 2 weeks after treatment. Many patients have Migraine treatments every 3 months.

The dosing for treatment is variable. Botox for migraine headaches takes approximately 50-100 units. The most suitable dosage for you can only be decided at your consultation.
